The price of survival…
Gabriel Miller swept into my life like a storm. He tore down my father with cold retribution, leaving him penniless in a hospital bed. I quit my private all-girl’s college to take care of the only family I have left.
There’s one way to save our house, one thing I have left of value.
A forbidden auction…
Gabriel appears at every turn. He seems to take pleasure in watching me fall. Other times he’s the only kindness in a brutal underworld.
Except he’s playing a deeper game than I know. Every move brings us together, every secret rips us apart. And when the final piece is played, only one of us can be left standing.
THE PAWN is a full-length contemporary novel from New York Times bestselling author Skye Warren about revenge and seduction in the game of love.
The Pawn is a gem. Warren takes us on a hauntingly beautiful journey of danger and betrayal, self-discovery and love. Nothing is as it seems and I could not put it down!
Avery was living the life as the daughter of a well-respected, wealthy businessman. She had her whole life ahead of her. Then everything changed and she lost it all. Now she is struggling to keep her head above water and care for her ailing father. She will do anything, including the unthinkable. When she approaches the biggest crime lord in the city for a loan, he proposes the unthinkable and Avery is out of options and forced to accept. She sells her virginity in a high stakes auction and is bought by the sexy, brooding Gabriel Miller.
I actually quite loved this book. It is by far my favorite of Skye Warren’s books. Avery goes from a rich, spoiled 18 year old to a broken and scared 19 year old. In the first half of the book, she is scared and unsure; yet, she is willing to do whatever it takes to save her father and her house. The second half of the book brings out a whole new Avery, full of fire and strength.
Gabriel is dark and sexy and brooding, but lurking underneath that hard exterior is a broken boy who seeks love and acceptance. He had a rough childhood, which has made him the man he is today. His outward appearance is tough, but he gives these little hints of the real Gabriel to Avery at vulnerable moments.
The chemistry was off the charts. They were using each other, but could see more in the other person, things they wanted and didn’t even know they needed. Gabriel is gruff and pushes Avery to her boundaries in an attempt to knock her down, but he is actually building her up and she knows what she wants and when she realizes it is Gabriel she wants, she is fierce and loving.
Oh, but this is all just a game. There are so many twists and turns in this chess match between Avery and Gabriel, you won’t see what is coming around every page turn.
The Pawn is mesmerizing in its raw beauty. A beautiful love story between two broken people. You won’t be able to put it down. And that cliffhanger ending is screamworthy!
