The Hard Truth About Sunshine AMAZON

New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett has written her most gripping and poignant tale yet. Provocatively heart-breaking, audaciously irreverent and romantically fulfilling, The Hard Truth About Sunshine exposes just how very thin the line is between a full life and an empty existence.

Despite having narrowly escaped death’s clutches, Christopher Barlow is grateful for nothing. His capacity to love has been crushed. He hates everyone and everything, completely unable to see past the gray stain of misery that coats his perception of the world. It’s only after he involuntarily joins a band of depressed misfits who are struggling to overcome their own problems, does Christopher start to re-evaluate his lot in life.

What could they possibly learn from one another? How could they possibly help each other to heal? And the question that Christopher asks himself over and over again… can he learn to love again?

He’s about to find out as he embarks upon a cross country trip with a beautiful woman who is going blind, a boy with terminal cancer, and an abuse victim who can’t decide whether she wants to live or die.

Four people with nothing in common but their destination. They will encounter adventure, thrills, loss and love. And within their travels they will learn the greatest lesson of all.

The hard truth about sunshine…
Warning: This book deals with some tough issues including suicide and sexual abuse.

My Review:

 5 Stars!!
Top Read of 2017!

I was a mess by the time I got to the words “The End” and I would go back and do it over and over again, because this book was amazing! So, head’s up, make sure the tissues are handy, you have a quiet place to read and then dig in to this beautiful book about love, loss, redemption, life and death.

Listen, I’ll be honest. If you are expecting a steamy romance a la Sawyer Bennett that is not what this is. The Hard Truth About Sunshine is so much more than just sex and a happily-ever-after. This is my favorite of all of Sawyer Bennett’s books and I am a big fan. I’ve read them all, but this one hands down takes the top spot.

Told entirely from the POV of Christopher, a broken former marine with an attitude problem and a deep hatred from life, Bennett has given us something different, brilliantly different. Bennett tackles topics like depression, death and suicide with honesty and a realistic rawness that hit you deep, but she does it with so much care and brilliance that I am truly in awe of her. Even though Christopher is rude and angry and at time down right mean, she writes him with enough care that you can see the light and goodness beneath the raw and angry exterior. I found myself deeply invested in his happiness and I rooted for him hard from the beginning. It was emotional to read his journey with these three other people that he assumed he had nothing in common with. To see him begin to slowly open up and start to develop a trust was truly amazing. I loved his character.

The three other members of the road trip foursome were equally intriguing. Jillian is a perpetually glass half-full kind of girl, who despite her own issues is constantly lifting the others up. She never backs down from Christopher and she always seems to know just what the others need. Conner was heartbreaking and beautiful. He was wise beyond his years due to his circumstances and yet he was often the comic relief that was so desperately needed at times throughout the book. Finally, there was Barb. Barb was perpetually depressed and her thoughts were never far from suicide. She was dark and yet we were honored with tiny glimpses of the girl she once was before.

This book is not an easy read by any means, but it is well worth the emotional upheaval that Bennet’s words bring. She does not back down and sugar coat difficult topics, instead she approaches them with raw honesty that is at times uncomfortable, but the discomfort is worth it… so worth it.

I cannot recommend this book enough and I hope you will take yourself on this beautiful journey of redemption, friendship and love.

Jillian holds my gaze for a moment, her eyes drilling into mine before she gently tugs on the material of my jeans near the shin rod of my prosthetic. “What happened to you?”

She doesn’t look away. Not down at the fire, not down to my legs. She stares right at me. Although my gut is turning slightly at the thought of telling her what she asked, I forge straight ahead. For the first time, I tell someone who is not medical personnel or a shrink my story.

“I was driving a military Humvee and the right front tire ran over a roadside bomb,” I say, and Jillian makes a sound of distress low her in throat as her eyes turn sad. “It completely obliterated my buddy sitting in the passenger seat.”

To my surprise, Jillian scoots over closer to me and lays her head on my shoulder. She pushes her hand in between my ribs and my arm, curling her fingers over my bicep. It’s a show of support. Solidarity. That she’s settled in for the long haul of this story, and she wants to hear it all.

“It didn’t blow my leg off,” I tell her, and I can feel her body jerk slightly in surprise. Her fingers squeeze my bicep. “The fingers yes, the leg no. It just shattered and shredded it badly, but the doctors tried hard to save it.”

“Obviously, they couldn’t,” she whispers the obvious.

“They tried for three months,” I tell her, reaching down to grab my phone laying near my left hip. Jillian lifts her head up, watching as I pull up my pictures. I scroll backward, but it doesn’t take long to find what I’m looking for because I don’t take a lot of photos. I hold the phone out so she can see. “This was taken about a month after my injury.”

Jillian makes a strangled sound as she looks at the photo of me in bed. My eyes are half open because I was bombed out on so many heavy-duty pain medications, and I have a grimace on my face. I vaguely remember this picture being taken, and I think it may have been by my brother, Hank, when he came to visit once during that first month. He came a few more times after that, and then he didn’t.

Jillian’s eyes roam over the photo. My leg is encased in the external fixator with several rods leading from the outside of the cage right into my skin, where it’s drilled through and into the bone to hold the pieces together. The wounds on my leg are all open to the air, red and some of them dripping with puss and lined with blisters. I’ve got IVs in both arms and a PICC line in the right side of my neck to deliver the hordes of antibiotics and pain meds I needed to keep me alive and functioning. I took the maximum dosages they allowed me, preferring to try to be oblivious to what was happening. Yet, the pain was so great it just couldn’t be fully erased.

Jillian turns her head to look at me, and I lay the phone back down. “How long were you like that?”

“Three months. But they couldn’t get ahead of the infections, which were delaying the bones from knitting. I was in so much pain that I wanted them to amputate.”

“You had to make that decision?” she whispers.

I nod. “Yup. I mean… the doctors were at the point they felt it was the right way to go, although they were willing to keep trying if I wanted. But I wanted it gone. I was tired of being in the hospital and being in so much pain. I just wanted it gone.”

“Do you regret that decision?” she asks me bluntly, but with that still-sweet melody her voice makes. The question doesn’t bother me, because even her hard questions sound lovely.

“Yes,” I tell her without any shame. “I wonder what would have happened if I held on just a little bit longer. Not long after the leg came off, the pain receded and I became more lucid. Once I’d forgotten how bad the infections smelled, I regretted it.”

“Three months is an awful long time to be in pain like that,” she points out the obvious.

I shrug. “And the rest of my life is a long time to wonder ‘what if.’”

Soul Mates

Title: Soul Mates

Author: Nadine Nightingale

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Release Day: March 10th

About Soul Mates:

Alex is a righteous witch hunter. I’m a stab-worthy witch. We loved each other once. Now, we can’t stand to be near each other. It’s my fault. We are natural born enemies, after all. I had to help him save his brother from a psychotic voodoo priest, though. What can I say? I like Little Remington as much as I pretend to dislike Alex. Besides, he promised to never bother me again after that.

He kept his end of the bargain. I left my dubious life behind and started over. All is well. Until—

The truth about a deal with hell is revealed. I have to choose between the ultimate sacrifice or losing jerk-face forever. One will live, one will die. Who, solely depends on my selfishness.

My Review:

5 Stars!!

This…this right here is the paranormal romance I have been looking for.  Witches, hunters, demons…I mean really, what more can you ask for?  Oh, wait…you want a steamy, I-hate-you-but-I-really-love-you romance??  You got it.  Danger.  Yep.  That’s there, too.

Soulmates picks up after the end of Karma.  Me being me, I hadn’t read Karma.  When I realized I should, I stopped, grabbed it, read it, thanked the book gods and then continued on.  You don’t have to read Karma, but honestly, why wouldn’t you?  This series is the bomb.

Moving on…

We have Amanda, a witch with a serious attitude problem, who is still trying to get over the sting of betrayal brought on by super sexy hunter, Alex, when, you guessed, Alex shows back up.  Uh oh.  Yep, Alex is back, but his reason for returning isn’t too great.  Now, Amanda has to put aside her “feelings” for Alex and help save his life.  Because, you know, he went and made a bad deal with some seriously bad folks.  What we get is an awesome road trip (for reasons you have to read to find out), demon strip clubs, more witches and hunters, the big bad and this fun little gang of four who will have you laughing one minute and wanting to throw your book the next.  And the back and forth between Amanda and Alex is some of the best I-love-you-but-I-hate-you word porn I have ever read.

Oh my goodness and that cliffhanger has me screaming!!! For real. That was dirty pool, Nadine!!  Dirty Pool, I tell you!!

If you were craving a great paranormal read with kick butt characters, bad supernatural beings, danger and some seriously steamy foreplay-like banter, well that hustle your butt along and get this book.  It will not disappoint!

New Release: 5 Stars for Catching Carly by Emma Hart!

nowavailable2

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00027]My name is Carly Porter… And I’m really good at bad decisions.

How do I know this, exactly? Well, not including the time I accidentally bleached my eyebrows or sprained my ankle changing a lightbulb…

I had sex with my best friend’s brother.

Zeke Elliott has been a thorn in my side for eleven years. A very sexy, very tempting, very freaking annoying one. With big…hands.

And now my clitoris has a crush on the guy.

Seriously. I can’t look at him without my vagina performing accidental kegels. Which would be fine, but he’s Cain’s brother. I hate him. He’s off limits, right?

Right.

My Review:

5 Stars!

So, you know those books you love, the ones with the snarky heroine and the hero who is kind of a jerk, but you can’t help but love him.  Okay, good.  Now, take that book and times it by a hundred and you have the fun brilliance that is Catching Carly.

Carly Porter’s life is a mess of her own making.  She’s a self-proclaimed a&%)@(e, an awesome best friend and she’s lonely.  Now that her two BFFs, Brooke and Cain, have finally admitted their feelings and are happily in love, Carly is feeling a bit left out.  She is also fighting a raging case of regret after sleeping with Cain’s sexy, older brother, Zeke.  Zeke was engaged to be married two years ago, only to find his fiancée in bed with his friend two weeks before their wedding.  Needless to say, Zeke lacks in the trust department, especially when it comes to women.  But, ever since that drunken night of sex with Carly Porter, he can’t get her out of his head.  Only problem…they hate each other.

So, if you only minutely like Emma Hart’s books (and if that is the case, what the heck are you thinking???), Catching Carly is hard not to love.  Carly is funny, sassy, snarky, honest to a fault and she can’t see to control her mouth from saying what her brain is thinking.  It is absolutely hysterical.  Her interactions with everyone cracked me up.  Zeke is, as I said above, a jerk, but a lovable one.  He is kind of a mess, himself, what with the trust issues and lingering attraction to Carly and all.  Their hate for each other runs hot like their true feelings.  The book literally simmers with their feelings.

You’ve got Carly and Zeke who are so attracted to each other both trying to deny their feelings.  Then you have outside interference from, well, everyone else, because they’ve all figured out that Carly and Zeke love each other.  You put this all together and you get a laugh out loud funny book about letting go and giving in.  With Hart’s signature snarky, in your face writing, this book is sure to be on your favorites list faster than you can say Carly.

Excerpt

“Don’t blame me,” he says. “You’re easy to rile. You rise to the bait every time…Like a pretty little piranha.”

“Did you just—” I spin, the wet cloth in my hand, and stare at him.

He’s holding my cake. And he’s bitten into it. The frosting is on his nose.

I respond the only possible way. I throw the cloth I’m holding at his face. It’s a damn good shot, because it opens up mid-air and covers half his face, leaving one of his eyes uncovered.

Brooke coughs and looks away.

“Thanks.” Zeke wipes his face off with the cloth and chucks it back to me. “I needed that. The damn frosting gets everywhere.”

“My frosting,” I shoot at him, turning the tap back on. “My cupcake, my frosting, your karma.”

“You two are exhausting.” Brooke sighs, joining me at the sink. “You either need to be separated on a permanent basis, like three-year-olds, or just have sex.”

My stomach loop-the-loops. “Unless he comes with batteries, I’m not interested.”

“I don’t need batteries,” Zeke offers, his sexy grin now an even sexier smirk. “It’s pretty easy to keep going when you’re being prayed to mid-fuck.”

“Why? Because you’re a god?” Brooke asks dryly. “How original of you. That’s never been used by a guy in the history of ever.”

Well. In all fairness, I might have begged to a deity once or twice when we…Never mind.

Not thinking about that.

“Can we not talk about sex?” I look around the room.

“Why?” Cain grins. “Aren’t you getting any?”

I look him dead in the eye and say, “I don’t need any.”

Zeke snorts. “People always need sex, Carly.”

I turn my attention to him and raise my eyebrow. “No. People need oxygen and water and food. You don’t even need sex to make babies now. Your point is moot.”

8-what-it-would-be-like-copy

My Review:

5 Stars!!

I love this series!  Great characters with great stories!  Unwritten is Adams Rees’s story and it might just be my favorite of all the guys’.

The Long and Short

Adam Rees, son of a retired rock star, is seeking his own fame and fortune in the music business.  He’s had a series of bands in the past, but none that has worked as well as his current one, especially with their new lead singer, Davis.  Landry’s had a bad couple of years, what with the stalker and all that.  She is slowly trying to get her life back with the help of her brother, Davis, who is the new lead singer for an up and coming band.  Adam sees Landry across the crowded bar during one of their shows and he wants her.  When he finds out she’s Davis’s sister, he has to decide if she is worth it, because Davis is a great addition to the band and with him success could be in their grasp.

What I liked…

Pretty much everything.  Hee hee!  No, really.  I had a hard time finding anything I didn’t like.  All of the characters are great.  Frederick doesn’t rush Landry and Adam’s relationship and doesn’t drag it out either.  She somehow manages to find just the right momentum to move the book along.  Adam is a great book hero.  He is book boyfriend material for sure.  He is just tortured enough to care and so swoony you might want your own Adam.  Landry is pretty great herself.  She is just this side of nerdy and she starts off a little timid, but once this girl finds her voice, you’re going to want to stand behind her and shout “girl power.”  Oh, and let’s talk the band.  Why in all the reviews I have read does no one really address the hilarity that is Rudd?  Ok, I do get it.  This isn’t his book.  Right, but he adds to this story and provides some pretty fun comic relief!

What I didn’t like…

See above.  I honestly had a hard time trying to remember what I might not have liked.  ***thinking***  Nope.  Can’t really think of anything.  OK, maybe the only thing I had a bit of a hard time with was Adam’s seemingly unnecessary reluctance to help the band move forward despite the rest of the band wanting to.  Vague, I know.  But, you wouldn’t want me to spoil you, now would you?

Overall…

Overall, this is a fantastic book with great characters, rock stars, a swoony hero and a great forbidden romance storyline!  I highly recommend!

5 Stars for If You Were Mine by Melanie Harlow!

Title:  If You Were Mine

Series:  Standalone

Author:  Melanie Harlow

Publication Date:  2/28/2017

Synopsis:

Theo MacLeod wasn’t supposed to be the one.

Tall, dark and handsome suits me just fine, but the cocky grin, know-it-all attitude, and mammoth ego? No thanks. I only hired him so I wouldn’t have to sit at the singles table again. It was just pretend.

He wasn’t supposed to kiss me.

My heart wasn’t supposed to pound.

We weren’t supposed to spend the night together—the hottest night of my life.

One night turns into a snowed-in weekend away, and even the blizzard of the century can’t cool the fire between us. I can’t get enough—of his smile, of his body, of the way he makes me feel.

We’re nothing alike. He’s a daredevil, and I’m a nervous Nellie. He’s a drifter, and I want to put down roots. He’s an opportunist with a checkered past, and I’m a Girl Scout volunteer.

But none of it matters when I’m in his arms.

I know he’s made mistakes. I know his wounds are deep, and he doesn’t trust easily. I know he doesn’t believe he could ever be enough to make me happy, but he could.

All he has to do is stay.

My Review:

5 Stars!

Seriously, folks, if you are not yet a fan of Melanie Harlow, you will be after this amazing book!!

Theo MacLeod is a broken man. He suffers from bad childhood syndrome that has left him untrusting, unsettled and in a constant state of running away. The guy is a paid escort on a dude rental site for goodness sakes. When he is hired by Claire to be her date to a wedding so she can avoid the humiliation of being seated at the Singles’ table yet again, sparks immediately fly.
Let me tell you something…of all of the men in Harlow’s books, I think Theo might just be my favorite. Harlow does a fabulous job at writing lovable but highly flawed men, but, seriously, Theo takes the cake. He is sexy, funny and sweet and did I mention sexy. Oh, his dirty mouth is something else. His chemistry with Claire is off the charts.

Claire is a great heroine. She at first seems a bit meek and almost wishy-washy, but when she finally starts standing up for herself she becomes this whole new person that is proud, confident and full of love. Plus, she has this naughty side in the bedroom that was unexpected but really worked.

Theo and Claire are not without their problems. Trust is a big issue and it takes some time for the two of them to finally find that trust. Theo does most things with grand gestures to mask his insecurities. I loved that they weren’t all happy in love in the third chapter and then the big break up down the line at the somehow magic 75% number where everything goes to heck. It took these two time to build up to the romantic ending, which was quite perfect, by the way!

Melanie Harlow does it again with an absolutely endearing story of love and trust and finally finding that one person to love you. Do NOT miss out on this beautiful story!

My Review:

4.5 Stars!

This is such a beautiful love story!  I admit, I pictured Ariel and Eric from Disney’s The Little Mermaid often while reading it.  It was hard not to.  J  Katy Regnery brings us another magical fairy-tale retelling with her deeply emotional writing and her rich and wonderful characters.

This book is insta-love at its finest and for all you insta-love naysayers, reign in the doubt and give this book a chance.  It is a beautifully written story of breaking out and finding love.  It is so emotionally deep that you will need a box of tissues at the ready.

I am telling you strongly to one-click this book right now!  Go on.  Just do it!  You’ll thank me and Katy Regnery later!

THE HOT ONE - cover

A sexy new standalone romance from #1 New York Times Bestselling Author Lauren Blakely…

Ever notice that sometimes a guy will do something really stupid, like let the love of his life slip through his fingers?

Yeah. I’m that guy. But the instant I run into her again I’ve got one goal and one goal only—a second chance. The plan? Go big or go home.

Fine, at first glance, stripping naked at my ex-girlfriend’s place of work might not seem like the brightest way to win her heart again. But trust me on this count—she always liked me best without any clothes on. And sometimes you’ve got to play to your strengths when you’re fighting an uphill battle. As a lawyer, I know how to fight, and I’m prepared to fight hard for her. Because sometimes you need a second chance at first love.

He’s the one who got away . . .

The nerve of Tyler Nichols to reappear like that at my job, showing off his rock-hard body that drove me wild far too many nights. That man with his knowing grin and mischievous eyes is nothing but a cocky jerk to saunter back into my life. Except, what if he’s not . . .? I’ve tried like hell to forget him, but maybe I’m cursed to remember the guy I fell madly in love with eight years ago. Lord knows I’m not over him, so what’s the harm in giving him a week to prove he’s changed in the ways that matter?

After all, how do you resist the hot one . . .?

My Review:

5 Stars!!

Tyler Nichols is hands down my favorite of all of Lauren Blakely’s heroes!

Tyler Nichols is the king of all pompous, self-important jerks.  He is also sexy as hell!  He is a hot shot lawyer who once had the girl of his dreams, but he threw her away to pave the way for his own success.  I mean, really?  What kind of douche does that?  Tyler Nichols does.  And it paid off.  He is a bigshot entertainment lawyer with no personal life.  Cue the sad face followed by the eyeroll emoji.

Delaney was said girl of Tyler’s dreams and she is so over him.  She hasn’t seen him since he destroyed her seven years ago.  Now, she’s happily living the life, owns her own business and has her besties by her side.

When the two run into each other by chance, Tyler decides he needs to have her in his life and Delaney is not sure.  The only thing she is sure of is that she is going to make him work for it and work hard.

This book is sweet, sexy, infuriating fun!  The sex is scorching as Lauren Blakely does.  The banter between Tyler and Delaney is entertaining, fun and flirty.  I laughed out loud.  I yelled at Tyler for his douchiness.  I swooned when he finally turned on the charm and I cheered with they got their happy ending.

Lauren Blakely hit it out of the park with The Hot One!  You do NOT want to miss this!!

THE HOT ONE - RDL teaser 3

Tyler Nichols. Oh. My. God. The title is definitely apropos. This man is over the top HOT in oh so many ways. The Hot One is a read-in-one-sitting kind of story.” ~ Naughty Girls and Their Books

Excerpt:

She turns her head.

And waves.

And smiles.

That smile makes me feel like I can do this. Like I can win her heart again. Mine pounds faster as I near her, and it’s not just because I happen to think she’s the most stunning woman I’ve ever seen, but because of who she is.

I arrive at her side, and she straightens. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

There’s that awkwardness again, and I want no part of it today. Like the bungee jumper I am, I lean in and dust a quick kiss on her lips. At first, she freezes. That won’t fucking do at all. My tongue darts out, flicking her top lip. A soft breath escapes her, and she gives in. Her sweet lips linger on mine, sending a charge down my spine. My brain leapfrogs ahead, and I picture scooping her up in my arms, carrying her to a quiet little patch of trees, and kissing her till she begs me to take her home.

I want that badly—I want her to beg for it because she’s at her happiest when she’s overcome—but I suspect it’s too soon for her.

Not to mention, screwing in Central Park usually results in a public citation. Public fornicators are never as clandestine as they think they are.

I nibble lightly on her bottom lip for a few seconds, drawing out a throaty murmur from her. Then I somehow find the will to separate.

She blinks. Several times. She sways the slightest bit, like her feet barely touch the ground. Good. I want her to be affected.

She furrows her brow. “I’m sorry, but do we kiss now when we see each other in the park?”

“Evidently we do.”

“Weird. Because I didn’t get that memo.”

I rock on my heels. “Want me to take it back?”

“The kiss or the memo?”

“The memo,” I say matter-of-factly, like this is all so obvious. “You can’t take a kiss back.”

“You sure on that, Nichols?”

“I can try to take back the kiss. Want me to, sweet girl?” I use the term of endearment I once called her. She doesn’t blanch, and that’s a damn good sign.

She smirks. “Be my guest.”

I kiss her once more, like I’m reversing the lip lock, doing it all in rewind, pulling away ever so slowly, ever so softly, leaving her dazed once more.

Perfect.

If she can drive me this crazy, make me this hard, send the temperature in my blood to beyond incendiary, the least I can do is return the favor.

Judging from her reaction, I’m doing it right.

I gesture from her to me. “Like that. I think that’s how you take back a kiss.”

Chuckling, she nods to the running path. “Ready for me to kick your ass?”

Every competitive bone in my body snaps to attention. “We’ll see about that,” I say, then I smack her pink nylon covered behind.

Her eyes widen, saying oh-no-you-didn’t.

But there’s a twinkle in those baby browns that says the lady might like spanking.

That’s new, and it’s most interesting.

I pencil in a new item on my mental to-do list. Find out how much she likes spanking. I never spanked her in college—just wasn’t part of the repertoire. But judging from her response now, I’m more determined than ever to find out everything she likes in and out of bed.

Pucked Off, an all-new emotional and sexy STANDALONE from Helena Hunting is LIVE!!

Pucked Off by Helena Hunting
Genre: Contemporary Romance

businessman working on laptop in black suit

***A Standalone novel in The Pucked Series***

I’m NHL defenseman Lance Romero, AKA Lance “Romance.”

I’m notorious for parties and excess. I have the most penalty minutes in the league. I get into the most fights. I take the most hits. I’m a player on and off the ice. I’m the one women with no inhibitions want.

Not because I like the notoriety, but because I don’t know how to be any other way.

I have secrets. Ones I shared with the wrong person, and she used them against me. Sometimes she still does. I should cut ties. But she makes it difficult, because she’s the kind of bad I deserve.

At least that’s what I believed until someone from my past gets caught up in my present. She’s all the good things in this world. She lights up my dark.

I shouldn’t want her.

But I do.

I should leave her alone.

But I won’t.

My Review:

5 Stars!!

You know, I think I always knew that Lance would end of my favorite. His crazy bad boy antics were kind of endearing in previous books and he was always just there like an old friend. Well, let me tell you, once you read this story, I dare you to tell me you didn’t love Lance “Romance” Romero!

The long and short of it is, Lance has issues. Issues I will not go into so as not to spoil the awesomeness of the story. But, suffice it to say, Lance may be a bad boy, but underneath all that bad boy exterior is a guy who just wants to deserve to be loved. He wants to be someone’s one and only. It was actually sort of heart-breaking to read at times. He was like a sweet, sad, little boy. Then, he meets a girl who changes everything for him.

This book is truly amazing. That is not an exaggeration. Helena Hunting has written Lance in such an honest and raw way. I have loved the whole series, but this is by far my favorite!

Excerpt:

Armed with my clipboard, I walk down the hall to the waiting room. Lance is impossible to miss. Despite the fact that he’s wearing a sweatshirt and the hood is covering half of his face, he’s more than six feet of broad, hockey-playing man.

He’s so wide his shoulders encroach on the chairs on either side, which would explain why no one is sitting next to him. He’s slouched down so his head rests on the back of the chair, and his hands are clasped in his lap, a baseball cap hanging off one knee. His lips, plush and soft—I know since I’ve had them on mine; it might have been a decade ago, but I remember it clearly—are parted. He looks like he’s asleep.

I clear my throat. “Lance Romero?”

He doesn’t move.

Bernadette, the receptionist, gives me a meaningful look.

I clear my throat again and call his name a second time. He jolts awake and the hood falls back, exposing his face. It’s not in good shape. He has a black eye and bruises on his left cheek. There’s a fly bandage across one eyebrow.

Sadly, he’s still hot.

He blinks a few times, yawns, and smacks his lips, his tongue touching the split in the bottom one. His gaze sweeps the room and finally lands on me. Heat explodes in my cheeks and courses through my limbs, warming me from the inside out as he starts at my sneaker-clad feet and roams up over my yoga pants to my company-issued T-shirt before stopping at my face. I can’t look directly at him for more than a couple of seconds. I sincerely hope he doesn’t remember me. I cannot go there and also be professional.

I’m sure the smile he gives me has melted many a panty off a slutty bunny. Mine stay right where they’re supposed to, wedged up my ass.

I force a polite, professional veneer. “I’m ready for you now.”
